BMI calculator

BMI turns up on intake forms and eligibility criteria, so it is worth being able to work out. It is also a blunt instrument, and worth understanding as one.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is stored.

How it is worked out

The formula

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)². For 82 kg at 1.78 m: 82 ÷ 3.168 = 25.9.

What it misses

BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, and does not account for where weight sits on the body, or for differences across ancestry and age. Two people with the same BMI can be in very different health.

Why it still appears

Because it is cheap to compute and widely used in eligibility criteria and research. Being able to work yours out is useful precisely because other people will.

Common questions

Does Cafeity use BMI for anything?
Only as one of several body figures you can record. It is never used to set a goal — the app will not accept a weight goal below a BMI of 18.5.
Is there a better measure?
Waist measurement and body composition both add information BMI cannot carry, and Cafeity records both. None of them is a diagnosis.

This is general wellness information

Cafeity does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition, and never recommends, calculates or adjusts a medication dose. Anything on this page is arithmetic you can check, not advice. Questions about your treatment belong with a licensed healthcare professional.
